Express Install Update Instructions

This update method will install a totally new instance of Ultimate Skyrim on your computer. This requires more disk space, but is arguably the easiest update method.

  1. Starting with Step Two, repeat the process on the Express Install page.

  2. Repeat the processes on the Final Steps page.

Manual Update Instructions

This update method will update your current instance of Ultimate Skyrim. This is a more complex update method - proceed at your own risk, and consider backing up your install first.

  1. Download and install the updated versions of mods listed under “Updated Mods” below, then remove their old versions. (Right-click in MO and select “Remove Mod”.)

  2. Make any changes specified under “Adjusted Mods” below. (FOMODs can be adjusted by re-installing mods. Right-click a mod in MO and select “Reinstall Mod”.)

  3. Download and install the Ultimate Skyrim 4.0.6 hf1 Mod Files. (Make sure to select your preferred control device.)

  4. Organize the mods in your Modlist (MO Left Pane) according to the 4.0.6 hf1 Official Modlist.

  5. Organize the plugins in your Load Order (MO Right Pane) according to the 4.0.6 hf1 Official Load Order.

  6. Delete any files contained within MO’s “Overwrite” folder (located in Mod Organizer 2 > overwrite).

  7. Starting with Step Three, repeat the process on the Final Steps page.

  8. Run the game, and follow the updated MCM instructions to configure your new save.

Full Changelog

Updated Mods

  • Nether’s Follower Framework: Updated to 2.4.1.

  • Ultimate Skyrim: Updated to 4.0.6 Hotfix 1.

Adjusted Mods

  • JContainers: Moved lower in the modlist.

  • PapyrusUtil: Moved lower in the modlist.

New Features

  • There are now two separate Express Install files: one for keyboard users, and one for gamepad users. This should reduce confusion & tweaking for keyboard users who have no interest in gamepad controls, and vice versa.

  • Nearly all UI elements will fade when irrelevant/not in use, and several UI elements were slightly adjusted for even better usability/readability.

  • Many keys have been rebound for both Keyboard & Gamepad, and the Easy Wheel Menu has been expanded with additional commands. This should create a better user experience for both control methods. Please refer to the resources above for a full display of the new controls.

  • The camera has been overhauled with new settings for exploration, combat, and sneaking.

  • Edited the enblocal.ini instructions to remove keybinds for the Frame Limiter & VRAM unlocker. (Thanks dantemp for the suggestion)

  • The dirt textures from Bathing in Skyrim are now slightly more visible. Make sure to wash behind your ears!

Bug Fixes

  • The provided ini files have been corrected to utilize the intended FOV of 90 instead of 80. Keep in mind that raising the FOV may drop a few frames for some users, and select your ini preset accordingly.

  • The new batch of invisible mudcrabs have been made visible again.

  • The SkyUI default value for item stacking has been reset to 10, to allow stack selling.

  • Carry Weight bonuses from pouches, bandoliers, etc. are properly hardcoded and no longer tied to the CCOR MCM slider.

  • Fixed an issue where Backpacks were no longer displaying items dynamically, such as tents, waterskins, etc.

  • Fixed a bug where players could find themselves teleporting to a previous cell when using functions from Spell Research & Train and Study. (Thanks KBeazy for patching this!)

  • Quest items will no longer be removed from the player's inventory on death. (Thanks Hazard for this fix!)

  • Players can once again die from hypothermia as intended. (Another thanks to Hazard!)

  • The Customizable Camera FOV slider now functions properly. (Another thanks to Hazard - sensing a trend?)

Weekly Q&A and Progress Update — 8/3/2019

Happy Saturday everyone! Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I'm working on, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I'm working on

Season 2 Episode 1 Pushed Back

The bad news first: unfortunately, Season 2 Episode 1 of the Let's Play will need to wait until early next week. I tried my best to get it wrapped before the weekend, but I stretched myself a bit thin between the hotfix development & personal obligations, and so I decided to hold off on the episode until I was capable of putting my best work into it. Apologies for the delay, and thanks very much for the understanding.

(On the plus side: I plan to watch Episode 1 alongside you guys using YouTube's new "Premiere" feature. I'll let you guys know the exact date & time next week, so stay tuned for that.)

4.0.6 Hotfix 1 is in testing

The good news: Hotfix 1 is just about complete, and has been handed off to our testers. If the testing goes smoothly, HF 1 will drop early next week. Here's the changelog thus far:

New Features

  • There are now two separate Express Install files: one for keyboard users, and one for gamepad users. This should reduce confusion & tweaking for keyboard users who have no interest in gamepad controls, and vice versa.

  • Nearly all UI elements will fade when irrelevant/not in use, and several UI elements were slightly adjusted for even better usability/readability.

Bug Fixes

  • Quest items will no longer be removed from the player's inventory on death. (Thanks Hazard for this fix!)

As always, feel free to leave any comments or questions on the Reddit thread, and I'll get to everything I can as soon as I can.

Love, BB

    • This mod is now required.

  • Lore-Based Loading Screens

    • This mod is now required.

  • Relationship Dialogue Overhaul

    • FOMOD Installation: iAFT and EFF are no longer selected.

Mod Removals

  • Auto Unequip Ammo

    • Replaced by Nether’s Follower Framework.

  • Immersive Amazing Follower Tweaks

    • Replaced by Nether’s Follower Framework.

  • Racial Body Morphs

    • Several users have identified bugs in the RBM skeletons that prevent proper ragdolling behavior. The mod is removed until these bugs can be fixed.

  • Snotgurg’s Simple Drop Lit Torches

    • Replaced by iEquip.

New Features

  • Borderless Windowed mode is once again the default setting.

  • Ultimate Skyrim now features full Gamepad support, thanks to some long hours & the combined efforts of several incredible mods. Particular shout out to Dunc Smith, creator of iEquip & Gamepad++, without whom this would not even be close to possible.

  • Auto-configuration presets have been included for the following mods: A Matter of Time, Campfire, Frostfall, Gamepad++, iEquip, Less Intrusive HUD II, Simply Knock, SV Mods Menu, Thieves Guild Requirements, and Wearable Lanterns.

  • All varieties of hip pouch now provide the same Carry Weight bonus of 5, so players can mix and match different pouches/holsters/etc.

  • All Bandolier items now use slightly updated naming conventions so they’re better organized in the inventory.

  • All backpacks now have the Clothing keyword so vendors will buy & sell them appropriately.

  • Eorlund Gray-Mane only offers his smithing services to members of the Companions Circle.

  • Every blacksmith’s smithing skill has been individualized based on the their background, experience, and clientele (i.e. who pays their bills) . The most skilled blacksmiths are generally harder to find, and are often related to factions or areas of the world that are difficult to access.

  • Blacksmiths can now craft items from the Forge, Crafting Table, Tanning Rack, and Smelter.

  • Some NPC’s now offer Tailoring services, and accept orders for clothing & cloth items in the same way that blacksmiths accept orders for weapons, armors, etc. There’s generally at least one Tailor in each of the five major cities, and they can be identified by the spinning wheels they keep in their shops. (Other means of identifying Tailors will likely be added later.)

  • For realism, Imperial Mail savings account services have been restricted to major cities (where the gold assets can be adequately protected). You can access your savings account from all major city taverns, and from the main office in Solitude. All innkeepers still offer other Mail services, such as parcel shipping & passbook replacement. (Thanks to Hazard for setting up this framework!)

  • Civil war soldiers will no longer tolerate you looting their comrades’ corpses, and will report your crimes to their capital hold (Haafingar for the Legion, Eastmarch for the Stormcloaks).

  • The MCM Settings guide now distinguishes between essential settings & non-essential settings. It is also reformatted, edited for clarity, and generally polished.

  • ETaC apparently features optional Laundry & Bedding Clutter - how grand! These features have been enabled, and I gave the laundry water a slight visual touch up with the help of Realistic Water Two.

  • The “Harvest Wood” ability has been disabled to avoid confusion with the “Foraging” ability, and you can now forage both Firewood and Deadwood with the Forage ability, though Firewood is a rarer find.

  • Requiem’s “Examine” ability has been renamed to “Frisk”, since its other functions are effectively replaced by other abilities.

  • All UI meters feature an improved appearance, thanks to Hazarduss & Dunc Smith.

  • The College of Winterhold now requires prospective students to have 50 skill or greater in at least one magical school.

  • Faralda’s College admittance tests are much clearer about the school of magic you’ll be tested in.

  • The College’s various experiments & resources will now provide a small amount of magical XP when examined.

  • Completing quests for the Companions will yield more gold as you advance in rank.

  • If the player initially refuses the Beast Blood from Aela, it’s now slightly easier to convince her to offer it a second time.

  • Fast horse dismount is now the default way of dismounting a horse (and the player no longer defaults to drawing weapons on fast dismount).

  • The ini file from Better Stealing has been adjusted to make life a little harder for thieves. Items worth 50 gold or more will now be marked as Stolen.

  • NPC’s now wear a greater variety of hoods when it’s raining and/or cold.

  • Followers who’ve run out of potions will notify the player every 10 minutes, instead of the previous 5 minute intervals.

  • Followers no longer use potions out of combat to avoid potion wastage.

  • Follower tax through Simple Taxes has been disabled in favor of the tax system from NFF.

  • The script from Dynamic Things now scans less frequently, and the scan range has been slightly shortened. This should help players who sometimes encounter “invisible” containers.

  • The “Homenaje” font has been removed from Ultimate Skyrim’s core files to accommodate the new font Improved Arjestin Font Replacement.

  • Improved copy text for the Rested, Well Rested, Uplifted, & Inspired bonuses.

  • Followers will now use all potions and poisons given to them.

  • “Cook Food” has been reverted to “Primitive Cooking” to avoid confusion. This is purely cosmetic, and there is no functional difference in the primitive cooking mechanic.

  • The “Sense Direction” ability has been re-enabled.

  • MCM instructions have been added for Holidays, specifically regarding Non-Dragonborn characters & character birthdays.

  • New load screens have been added that feature useful tips on surviving and thriving in the world of Ultimate Skyrim.

  • Apothecaries now carry a greater variety of animal parts (though some animal parts still require expert hunting abilities).

  • Renamed Wooden Trolling Rods to be a bit easier to find in the crafting menus.

  • Activating a fresh animal kill while sneaking will no longer pick up the carcass automatically.

  • Animal butchering yields slightly more meat.

  • Combat will no longer prevent animal field dressing, butchering, harvesting, etc.

  • Animations have been disabled for field dressing, butchering, harvesting, etc. (I found these animations jarring in first person because the camera is reset vertically before & after the animation; since the player is usually looking down when performing these actions, there’s a large “jump” between camera states.)

  • The Hunterborn cookbook is no longer required for “obscure” Hunterborn food recipes. (This is in preparation for UltSky’s blueprints, which will supersede all other “recipe” restrictions.)

  • Dragons can now be harvested for additional dragon parts like blood, eyes, etc.

  • The Spinning Wheels in the Hag’s Cure and the Radiant Raiment have been relocated to make them more obvious, and to prevent clipping.

  • Adjusted many “armored cloth” recipes to use pre-made clothing. Affected recipes: Dragonhide Robes, Ebony Mage Armor, and Dwarven Mage Armor.

  • Research Journals now require linen thread & slightly less paper.

  • The price of ink has been slightly reduced.

  • Restored a small chance for Bandit tricksters/wizards to keep Spell Tomes as loot.

  • Iron Kettles & Iron Cauldrons now have identical attributes (value, weight, recipes, etc.) for congruence purposes with Spell Research.

  • You can now re-ignite a burnt out torch by combining it with Flammable Oil at the Crafting Table, or in your Crafting Ledger.

  • Various cloth recipes now use metal fragments/rings instead of full ingots for realism. Affected recipes: all Dragon Priest cloaks, Sheogorath’s Garb, Silk Embroidered Raiments, Psijic Gloves/Robes, Silk Radiant Raiment, Cotton Fine Boots, and Cotton Focusing Gloves.

  • The gold rewards for Missives quests have been increased across the board, especially in the cases of gathering quests where the value of goods gathered was formerly much higher than the quest payout.

  • More taxes have been implemented through Simple Taxes, but the taxes themselves have been generally lowered.

  • The cost for renting out a mine has been increased from 750 to 1000, and the friend discount has been increased from 300 to 500.

  • It’s no longer illegal to use crafting equipment at night in populated locations. (This feature is unfortunately incompatible with SkyrimSouls.)

  • Investing in a shop now costs 1000 gold (previously 500), and merchants you invest in will now have 2000 more gold to trade with (previously 1500).

Bug Fixes

  • All bugs related to Ultimate Skyrim’s death system should be fixed, since death is now handled by the Ashes mod.

  • Gold Ingots can no longer be exchanged for other forms of currency, which prevents an infinite gold exploit.

  • Giant Mudcrabs are no longer invisible.

  • Warmth is properly increased by racial Resist Frost bonuses.

  • Former vampires who’ve purged their curse are no longer restricted from healing items. (Thanks to Hazarduss for the extensive testing & fix on this issue.)

  • The CCOR MCM has been updated to properly display recipes for Artifact Replicas and Armored Circlets, and to disable CCOR’s “Learn to Craft” systems.

  • Hunterborn’s mechanics for learning ingredient effects will no longer supersede the equivalent perks in the Alchemy tree. (Thanks prdmsq for identifying the cause of this problem & providing a solution.)

  • All of ETaC’s alcoholic beverages are now recognized by iNeed.

  • Reduced the experience gain received from priest healing (until I can figure out how to eliminate the experience gain completely).

  • Lanterns will no longer switch to a different mesh when extinguished/re-lit.

  • Fixed an issue preventing Daedric weapon recipes from appearing at the forge.

  • Fixed an erroneous load screen from Spell Research directing players to craft Research Journals at Tanning Racks instead of Crafting Tables.

  • Moved the merchant chest at Solitude’s East Empire Company Warehouse to prevent clipping.

  • Fixed a bug preventing empty waterskins from being refilled if the player had more than one empty waterskin in their inventory.

  • Removed an erroneous occlusion plane causing the world to de-render when players stood near the old “floating door” bug in Falkreath.

  • Edited the names of Frostfall Spell Tomes so they match the new naming conventions from Requiem.

  • Fixed a name typo for the Bolt of Decay spell.

  • Fixed the excessive value of Double-Distilled Skooma.

  • Corrected some typos in priest dialogue.

  • Fixed various inconsistencies in the recipes & breakdowns of Nordic Cuirass variants.

  • Removed Falskaar from the Paper World Map FOMOD instructions.

  • Ancano’s Gloves properly confer the Arcane Storm spell.

  • The description for Boethiah’s Embrace properly displays a damage value of 12 instead of 5.

  • Bottled drinks can be poured out again via the Crafting Ledger.

  • Bardic Knowledge is no longer stackable, and can only be casted once a day.

  • The descriptions for Deathbrand armor pieces have been corrected, and now convey their proper effects.

  • Elven weapons from Heavy Armory break down into Moonstone as intended, instead of Quicksilver.

  • Mead and Ale Kegs have been removed. (They never worked anyway, and were intended for use with Realistic Needs and Diseases.)

  • Added missing recipes and breakdowns for Wooden Fishing Rods, as well as missing breakdowns for wooden weapons.

  • The listed name for Dragon Tongue Soap have been brought in line with the rest of US’s naming conventions.

  • Broken stats for the Stalhrim Heavy Crossbow have been fixed. It’s now the fearsome weapon it was intended to be.

  • The Magicka cost for Summon Ash Spawn has been fixed, and is now appropriately higher.

  • Disabled recipe for Bone War Axe, which was intended to be disabled already. (Bone weapons may make a return at some point, but require balancing & are disabled until that point.)

  • Certain polar bears will no longer speak like humans. ;)

  • Many load screen typos have been corrected.

  • The Leather Seadog, Steel Hammerfell Light Mail, and Nord Light Mail sets now require Advanced Light Smithing as intended, and the Steel Hammerfell Light Mail has been slightly buffed.

  • The Hedge Knight set now requires Ebony Smithing to craft & temper, and Ebony Ingots have been added to its recipes.

  • The Heavy Mantle of the Silver Hand now requires Advanced Blacksmithing, and its armor rating has been slightly nerfed.

  • The Studded Warm Cuirass has been nerfed slightly, and its missing breakdown recipes have been added.

  • Campfires will no longer display duplicate options for building & upgrading fires.

  • The Steel Bastard Sword is no longer invisible.

  • Fixed clipping rowboats and snow piles in Morthal.

  • Added breakdown recipes for village-themed saddles & added Craftsmanship as a requirement for both their recipes and their breakdowns.

  • Restored the missing Lich perks in the Conjuration tree. (Thanks Hazard for providing a fix!)

  • Removed some floating objects in Shroud Hearth Barrow.

  • Fixed some improperly placed floating rings in the Midden.

  • Fixed a typo in the description for “Fortified Muscles” asking for Mammoth Fat instead of Mammoth Heart.

  • Restored missing temper recipe for Steel Boots.

  • The description for the perk “Improved Mage Armor” has been corrected, and now states that no armor can be worn to experience the perk bonus.

  • The wool-working stool in the Hag’s Cure has been adjusted so players won’t get stuck after using it.

  • Sleeping in your owned Atronach Crossing homes will properly confer the Well Rested bonus.

  • Income from rental homes will be properly credited to your Imperial Mail account.

  • Added some missing ETaC foods to Dynamic Crafting.

  • Frostfall’s effects for rain & snow have been disabled to prevent redundancy with Wet & Cold.

  • Containers can no longer be selectively converted to safe storage. This is for balance purposes, and to prevent bugs & incorrect container behavior.

  • DLC helmets are no longer invisible due to incorrect model assignments.

  • Fixed a bug with a certain load screen displaying a female Imperial with ghostly eyes.

  • Carry Weight bonuses from Bandolier items are now hard-coded to prevent the bug where the bonuses reset & their sliders must be re-adjusted in the CCOR MCM.

  • Removed duplicate recipe for the Aetherial Crown.

  • Removed duplicate breakdown for Iron Mace.

  • Re-enabled a recipe for the White Nordic Shield that was disabled by mistake.

  • Items can no longer be dropped in “stacks” to prevent these items from disappearing. (This appears to be a “bug” with SkyrimSouls.)

  • Fixed Cotton Mourner’s Clothes to reflect their actual material (Linen).

  • Mead Kegs are no longer set to dynamic in the Dynamic Things MCM (and were never intended to be, as this feature does not work with iNeed).

Weekly Q&A and Progress Update — 7/19/2019

Hello everybody. Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I'm working on, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I'm working on

I dedicated nearly all of this week to the Prologue for Season 2 of the UltSky Let's Play. My original intention was to release the entire prologue in one video, but as the scope of the story expanded, I frankly ran out of time - and so I decided to release the prologue in two parts.

You can watch Part One by clicking this link.

Part Two is on the docket for next week, along with 4.0.6, so you can safely expect both by end of day next Saturday (7/27). I believe (hope) you guys will find them worth the wait! ;)

As always, feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and I'll get to everything I can as soon as I can.

Love, BB

Weekly Q&A and Progress Update — 7/12/2019

Hello everybody. Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I'm working on, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I'm working on

This week's update will be short and sweet, as frankly I need all the time I can get to work on 4.0.6 & Season 2! :)

I spent the vast majority of this week working on bugfixes and small feature improvements, like making battlefield looting illegal, removing the infinite Ingot to Gold exploit from Exchange Currency, creating auto-configuration files for mods like Less Intrusive HUD II & iEquip, and equalizing Carry Weight bonuses from pouches (so players can mix and match). 4.0.6 is filled with little touches like this, which I hope will add polish to your guys' experiences.

My goal is to drop 4.0.6 next Friday at the same time as Season 2 Episode 1, but I may drop it a few days after if I need a bit more time to fix even more bugs. I'll let you guys know next Friday where things are at.

As a parting gift, here's a list of the added & updated mods thus far in 4.0.6:

Added Mods

Updated Mods (not counting DynDOLOD)

  • Atronach Crossing: Updated to 2.3.0.

  • Cobb Positioner: Updated to 2.3.2.

  • Hunterborn: Updated to 1.6.

  • Immersive Patrols: Updated to 2.2.2.

  • Missives: Updated to 2.03.

  • Spell Research: Updated to 2.1.2.

  • Ultimate Skyrim: Updated to 4.0.6.

  • Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch: Updated to 3.0.15.

As always, feel free to leave any comments or questions below, and I'll get to everything I can as soon as I can.

Weekly Q&A and Progress Update — 7/5/2019

Hello everybody. Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I'm working on, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I'm working on

As most of you know, this week I pushed back the release of Season 2 Episode 1 to July 19th. My sincerest apologies for the delay, but as I said in the video, I believe this extra time was necessary to ensure that Season 2 (and by extension, 4.0.6) are of the highest quality they can be.

I spent most of the previous week finalizing the new control schemes for both the keyboard and the gamepad, and thanks to the combination of iEquip, Gamepad++, and other UI mods, Ultimate Skyrim 4.0.6 will feature gamepad support out of the box (and I'm quite proud of the new controls, to be honest!)

I also started formally penning the backstory for Season 2's character, which has been quite the effort, but is also coming along nicely. This backstory will be explained in an intro video preceding S1:E1, and I plan for both videos to drop on July 19th.

I plan to spend this next week almost exclusively on the final bugfixes and features for 4.0.6, after which I'll be putting together the intro video for Season 2, and practicing my gamer skillz before finally recording and uploading S1:E1.

As always, feel free to leave any comments or questions, and I'll get to everything I can as soon as I can.

Weekly Q&A and Progress Update — 6/25/2019

Hello everybody. Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I'm working on, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I'm working on

For the past week, I've been working almost exclusively on version 4.0.6, which includes a ton of bugfixes that couldn't make it into 4.0.5, as well as a whole host of new features & improvements that I wanted to cram into the installation before I begin work on 4.1.0.

The next big task on my list is formalizing the new gamepad control scheme, courtesy of Dunc Smith's Gamepad++.

Until then, here's a list of the changes that have already been implemented into 4.0.6 (not including the UI changes from last week's post). This is not a full list of all the changes going into 4.0.6, as there are many more bugfixes likely to make the cut (and a few new mods as well).

New Features

  • Borderless Windowed mode is once again the default setting.

  • Eorlund Gray-Mane only offers his smithing services to members of the Companions Circle.

  • Every blacksmith’s smithing skill has been individualized based on the their background, experience, and clientele(i.e. who pays their bills) .

There’s generally at least one Tailor in each of the nine major cities, and they can be identified by the spinning wheels they keep in their shops. (Other means of identifying Tailors will likely be added later.)

  • The ini file from Better Stealing has been adjusted to make life a little harder for thieves. Items worth 50 gold or more will now be marked as Stolen.

  • Followers who’ve run out of potions will notify the player every 10 minutes, instead of the previous 5 minute intervals.

  • Followers will now use all potions and poisons given to them.

  • iAFT followers can carry slightly less than before (100 lbs vs 150 lbs previously)

  • MCM instructions have been added for Holidays, specifically regarding Non-Dragonborn characters & character birthdays.

(I found these animations jarring in first person because the camera is reset vertically before & after the animation; since the player is usually looking down when performing these actions, there’s a large “jump” between camera states)

  • Adjusted many “armored cloth” recipes to use pre-made clothing. Affected recipes: Dragonhide Robes, Ebony Mage Armor, and Dwarven Mage Armor.

(This feature is unfortunately incompatible with SkyrimSouls.

  • Investing in a shop now costs 1000 gold (previously 500), and merchants you invest in will now have 2000 more gold to trade with (previously 1500).

Bug Fixes

  • The CCOR MCM has been updated to properly display recipes for Artifact Replicas and Armored Circlets, and to disable CCOR’s “Learn to Craft” systems.

  • Bottled drinks can be poured out again via the Crafting Ledger.

  • Added missing recipes and breakdowns for Wooden Fishing Rods.

  • Added breakdown recipes for village-themed saddles & added Craftsmanship as a requirement for both their recipes and their breakdowns.

Weekly Q&A and Progress Update — 6/18/2019

Weekly Q&A and Progress Update — 6/18/2019

Hello everybody. Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I'm working on, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I'm working on

At the moment, I'm focusing exclusively on preparation for Season 2 & version 4.0.6, which will be the last release for the 4.0.x series (and the version that I'll be playing for the first episodes of Season 2).

Because 4.0.6 is the last in the series, it's the version that will be express installable for free once 4.1.0 drops - so I want to ensure it's as polished as possible.

UI & Controls Overhaul

The first big addition to 4.0.6 is the UI & Controls Overhaul, which I've eagerly anticipated for some time now. iEquip is nearing release, along with an updated version of Gamepad++, which means I can finally implement the UI & control changes I've planned for a long while. (For those who don't know, iEquip & Gamepad++ are the creations of the illustrious Dunc Smith, whose work I believe will revolutionize UI & controls in Skyrim. It's seriously that good.)

For this overhaul of UI & controls, my major design goals were to:

  • Display critical information clearly & intuitively, such as vital attributes, status effects, equipment condition, remaining consumables, etc.

  • Reduce eye travel between UI elements

  • Increase readability of textual UI elements

  • Organize UI elements according to the control scheme - particularly important for Gamepad support

  • Reduce UI "clutter" & non-critical elements, such as the compass, clock widgets, superfluous textual notifications, etc.

  • Create a sleek, unobtrusive, and unified general design that maintains immersion & makes efficient use of screen real estate

To accomplish this task, I used a combination of iEquip, Gamepad++, Less Intrusive HUD II, Immersive HUD, moreHUD, SkyUI, iNeed, Loot & Degradation, Frostfall, Wearable Lanterns, Easy Wheel Menu, Realistic Torches, Improved Arjestin Font, and A Matter of Time.

With the help of these mods, Dunc Smith, user /u/hazardoss, and after a lot of tweaking & finagling, I'm pleased to present the new Ultimate Skyrim UI, which will launch in 4.0.6:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

There's a lot to take in here, so feel free to ask if you have any questions about the new UI and/or controls, and how this all functions. Feel free to leave any general comments & questions as well, and I'll reply to whatever I can, as soon as I can.

Love, BB

Release (6/14/19) - Ultimate Skyrim 4.0.5

Release (6/14/19) - Ultimate Skyrim 4.0.5

Happy Friday everybody!

This is a fairly sizable bugfixing patch that should address the major issues in 4.0.4. It includes a revamp to crafting stations, a fix for the bug blocking Main Quest progression, and other fixes & improvements. Make sure to check out the full changelog for a comprehensive list of changes.

There are still a handful of minor bugs I’d like to address before moving on to 4.1.x, so stay tuned for another bugfixing patch in the coming weeks - after which it’s full speed ahead to 4.1.0. :)

Please note that new versions of Ultimate Skyrim are not intended to work with old saves, and using old saves with newer versions is likely to cause issues that our support team cannot address. (That said, you’re welcome to try if you like.)

Express Install Update Instructions:

Note: This will install a totally new instance of Ultimate Skyrim on your computer. This requires more disk space, but is arguably the easiest update method.

  1. Starting with Step Two, repeat the process on the Express Install page.

  2. Repeat the processes on the Final Steps page.

Manual Update instructions:

Note: These instructions are for installing the update on your current instance of Ultimate Skyrim. This is a more complex update method - proceed at your own risk, and consider backing up your install first.

  1. Download and install DynDOLOD Resources 2.64 from this link.

  2. In your Modlist (Left Pane), place the new version of DynDOLOD in the same position as the old DynDOLOD version & untick the old version.

  3. Download and install Ultimate Skyrim 4.0.5 from this link.

  4. In your Modlist (Left Pane), place the new version of Ultimate Skyrim in the same position as the old Ultimate Skyrim version & untick the old version.

  5. In your Load Order (Right Pane), drag and drop “RTSSDNDSS.esp” into its new location, as specified by the Official Load Order. (Right above ETaC - Complete.esp.)

  6. Remove the mods “Not So Fast - Main Quest”, “Horses Gone Wild”, “Campfire Shrines”, “Religion”, and “Religion 2.0.6 Hotfix”.

  7. Re-run the Reqtificator, DynDOLOD patcher, and Automatic Variants patcher using the guide on the Final Steps page.

  8. Open the MCM for Sleep Tight and change Options > NPCs > Friendly Sleepwear to “Naked”.

  9. Open the MCM for iNeed and untick Difficulty > World > Valued Harvests.

Full Changelog:

Mod Updates

  • Ultimate Skyrim has been updated to 4.0.5.

  • DynDOLOD has been updated to 2.64.

  • EFF has replaced iAFT as the default follower mod in the Express Install.

Mod Removals

  • Not So Fast - Main Quest has been removed. This fixes Delphine’s broken AI after retrieving the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, and allows the main quest to progress.

    • I did manage to “fix” the bug without removing NSF-MQ, but I could not restore the dialogue about renting the “attic room” without breaking the quest. I felt this dialogue was important to include, since the “attic room” is Delphine’s clever way of identifying the Dragonborn.
I opted to remove the mod so that this dialogue could be preserved, and because most of NSF-MQ’s functionality is bypassed anyway by Skyrim Unbound. (The only remaining functionality from NSF-MQ was the optional bypassing of negotiations in Season Unending, and US’ official MCM instructions do not utilize this bypass anyway.)

  • Horses Gone Wild has been removed. Fare thee well, friend - you tried your best!

  • Religion & the Religion Hotfix have been removed in preparation for new religion mechanics in 4.1.x, and to fix the currently broken religion mechanics in 4.0.x. Religion mechanics will be default Requiem until 4.1.x.

  • Campfire Shrines has been removed in preparation for new religion mechanics in 4.1.x.

New Features

  • The crafting menus have been reworked to improve performance and usability. It is highly recommended to use the SkyUI search function when crafting.

    • Using a crafting station will only display recipes from that station. For example, using a Cooking Pot will only show Cooking Pot recipes. (Keep in mind that crafting stations will only show recipes if you have the requisite perks.)

    • The Crafting Ledger still displays all recipes, and allows dynamic crafting by scanning for nearby stations. (Please note that the list of visible recipes will be greatly reduced with the introduction of Blueprints in 4.1.x, since the player must collect Blueprints to unlock recipes.)

  • All items requiring Strange Brew now contain the string “(Strange Brew)” in their name, so their recipes can be easily located via SkyUI’s search function when the player has imbibed Strange Brew.

  • The Craftsmanship perk is no longer required for crafting Powdered Mudcrab Chitin.

  • Bryling the Solitude jeweler has expanded her inventory with a much greater variety of jewelry.

  • Several apiaries have been replaced with proprietary versions with greater bee/honeycomb yields. Future updates will replace all apiaries with these proprietary versions for maximum consistency.

  • iNeed’s “Valued Harvests” feature has been disabled; instead, all crops & harvestables around the world have been assigned proper ownership, and are purchaseable directly from the farmers who own the crops. (If you encounter any crops that aren’t owned when they should be, please report them on Discord.)

    • I made this choice for a couple of reasons. I found through testing that “Valued Harvests” allowed crop purchasing even when farmers weren’t around (for example, at 3 AM), despite iNeed’s purport that crops could only be purchased from 8 AM to 8 PM. Also, “Valued Harvests” did not display the crop’s price before purchase. Since Farmers already sell their crops through the standard vendor interface (thanks to Realistic Trading Stocks of Skyrim), I figured it was best to disable “Valued Harvests” altogether & assign proper ownership to all planted crops instead.

Bug Fixes

  • NPC’s no longer utilize dynamic crafting (i.e. scanning for nearby crafting stations). This prevents unnecessary lag.

  • Horses from Expanded Towns and Cities are no longer purchaseable for less than their intended cost.

  • Tanning Racks from Campfire & Atronach Crossing now display the proper recipes.

  • Crafting stations from Campfire & Atronach Crossing now register properly with the Crafting Ledger.

  • Recipes now display properly for Wooden Torches, Leather, and Fur Plates.

  • Recipes now display properly for converting Ingots to Fragments and Fragments to Ingots.

  • Ore recipes will display properly regardless of CCOR’s MCM settings.

  • Dirt textures from Bathing in Skyrim have been de-oranged. (Thanks Gatonegro)

  • Hiring Blacksmiths will no longer level the player’s skills.

  • The missing floor in the Abandoned Prison has been restored, along with some nearby clipping water. (Thanks Nathan!)

  • A floating door has been removed from Falkreath Hold. (Thanks Nathan & Novo)

  • A mysterious magical slab in Morthal has been relocated to prevent clipping. What purpose could it serve? ;)

  • The clipping drawbridge in Morthal has been removed.

  • The MCM for Sleep Tight has been adjusted so that sleeping NPC’s will no longer wear helmets/boots/gauntlets.

  • Unique capes & cloaks like The Cape of Red Eagle no longer display incorrect information in their tooltip & in the Active Effects menu.

  • The Traveler’s Light Blade can now cast its spell as intended.

  • Summoning spells from Realistic Trading Stocks of Skyrim have been renamed to bring them in line with Requiem’s summons.

  • The keyword “VendorItemBardInstrument” has been properly forwarded to relevant items.

  • The Crafting Table at Dragon Bridge no longer clips with the nearby Tanning Rack.

  • The Barter Fix SKSE Plugin is now included with Ultimate Skyrim to prevent the bug where players receive no gold when trading with merchants who have very large gold reserves. (Thanks to mod author kassent for allowing this integration.!)

  • Added missing breakdown recipes for Flawless pelts.

  • Broken breakdown recipes have been fixed for Pelt: Cave Bear Cub (Fine).

  • Removed duplicate recipes for Eidar & Goat Cheese Wheels.

  • Cheese wheels no longer separate into wedges/slices automatically when consumed, and can instead be separated manually through the Crafting Ledger (or consumed whole).

  • Vendors no longer sell the (now obsolete) recipes for Healing Poultices.

  • Fixed incorrect naming of a few Holy Amulet Replicas.

Weekly Q&A - June 11th 2019

Weekly Q&A - June 11th 2019

Hey there everyone! Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I've been up to, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I've been working on

I spent the last week working almost exclusively on bugfixing, and plan to spend the rest of this week crushing more bugs for version 4.0.5, which will release sometime this week (Friday at the latest). Depending on how many bugs I manage to squash before Friday, 4.0.5 may be the last patch in the 4.0.x series before I move on to 4.1.0. If there are still bugs I'd like to address after 4.0.5, I may release a 4.0.6 patch to sweep those up before moving on to 4.1.0.

Bugfixing is tricky business, but it can also be a lot of fun. The mysterious nature of some bugs can make it hard to estimate how long a bug will take to fix, which isn't great for project/time management, but there's a real satisfaction that comes from identifying a bug, tracing the source, and successfully implementing a fix. It feels a bit like playing detective, and I try to savor the sweet moments. ;)

Go ahead and leave your comments & questions below, and I'll reply to whatever I can as soon as I can, as per usual.

Love, BB

Hey there everyone! Here's this week's Q&A thread, where you can ask questions about the experience, what I've been up to, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc. - basically anything that's not tech support.

What I've been working on

Last week was actually my bachelor party and I was only home & working Monday through Wednesday, so I unfortunately didn't get as much done as I would during a full week. That said, this week I've decided to really lean into the bugfixing patch to get it out ASAP. You guys have been waiting long enough for fixes to some very annoying bugs. ;)

I'll still be working on the project management on the side, which I need to get used to doing anyway.

With that, have at it and I'll reply to whatever I can as soon as I can.

Weekly Q&A (5/28/19)

Hey there everyone!

You can view this week’s post here.

Over the last week, I've been poring over the mod suggestion threads to make sure any & all pertinent suggestions are tracked in the new project management software. There have been some truly exciting suggestions, and since I had to examine them closely to estimate implementation time, I've even sketched rough implementations for some of the new mods & features (and some "overhauls" that combine several mods together to overall larger portions of the experience).

I know many of you are dying to suggest more mods, and I promise the suggestion threads will make a comeback in some way - I'm just figuring out the best way to go about it, with all the other project & community changes.

Alongside this work, I released the teaser trailer for Season 2 of the Ultimate Skyrim Let's Play. Make sure to check it out if you haven't yet!

Weekly Q&A (5/20/19)

Hey there everyone!

I decided to start weekly Q&A threads to give you guys a less formal look into what I've been working on, what my plans are for upcoming features, etc.

You can view this week’s post here.

This last week was almost entirely dedicated to migrating the project management from haphazard google documents to our new Jira project environment. There are a lot of tickets to transfer between new features, bugfixes, new mod additions, and the like, so it's been a time consuming process.

I plan to spend the beginning of this week finishing up that task, and then moving straight into the bugfixing patch.

Release (5/1/19) - Ultimate Skyrim 4.0.4

Happy Wednesday everybody!

This is a small patch that updates Ultimate Skyrim to the latest versions of USLEEP and DynDOLOD. It is primarily intended for those who have not yet installed Ultimate Skyrim.

If you already have a working US install, you can consider this update optional, as its changes are very minor.

Note that this is not the bugfixing patch mentioned in the last development update. That patch is still in progress, and will be 4.0.5 or whatever patch number we're at once it drops.

Update instructions:

  1. Download and install USLEEP 3.0.14 from this link.

  2. In your Modlist (Left Pane), place the new version in the same position as the old USLEEP version & untick the old version.

  3. Download and install DynDOLOD Resources 2.61 from this link.

  4. In your Modlist (Left Pane), place the new version in the same position as the old DynDOLOD version & untick the old version.
